Prāṇa

In Sanskrit prāṇa means vital energy or life-force. Prāṇa is connected to the breath hence we experience it every time we breathe. In yoga philosophy it is said that prāṇa can affect the mind as well as the body through the breath. This is one of the reasons why paying attention to the breath throughout our yoga practice is so important. For instance shallow breathing can make us feel tired faster, or breathing too deeply for a long time can make us feel dizzy.

There are many different breathing exercises called prāṇāyāma. Each of these techniques have a different effect on the body and mind. One of these techniques that we practice the most in class is call ujjayi prāṇāyāma or ujjayi breath. This is a louder breath that tends to be more energizing both mentally and physically.  Usually prāṇāyāma is practiced either sitting or laying down but Ujjayi prāṇāyāma is also suitable to be performed during our yoga practice.

In the weeks to come we will be placing a lot of emphasis in the technique to practice  ujjayi prāṇāyāma in the most beneficial way possible.

This week we also start an extended schedule at the YMCA. The Thursday class will start at 6:00pm and end at 7:30pm. We are also adding a Sunday class that will start at 11:00am and end at 12:30pm. I am very excited about these changes.

I look forward to seeing you in class

Blessings
