Expansion
This week we will turn to meditation as we continue to explore many different ways in which we can expand. This more internal way to expand can seem counterintuitive at the beginning since we all equate meditation to being free from thoughts. In a sense we look at meditation as a way to experience a void or emptiness so it looks like a letting go and not an expansion.
Meditation is about observing our inner landscape and the processes that take place in our mind without reacting to or elaborating on the thoughts that come up. As we practice this we come to recognize that all the fluctuations of the mind arise from and subside into a silent space. Our experience of this space is so short and fleeting that it takes a while to realize that it is there. Our minds are so used to going from one thought to the next that even when we become aware of this silent space we very quickly move away from it.
The sages of yoga were very familiar with this space and to them this void was not empty at all. From the stand point of Consciousness every single experience that we have takes place within this Consciousness. Since this is the case to the sages of yoga this silent place contained every single experience that can be had in seed form. So every time we can rest in this space we are resting in the emptiness of infinite being.
