Turning In

I hope you had a great Memorial Day weekend! This is considered the beginning of the summer season in our country. This is the time to be outside and be on the go to take advantage of the sunny longer days of this season. Even though it is great to do this, the yogis tell us that we can have a deeper enjoyment of all this activity if we make time to turn within. It is a constant playful pulsation that we are invited to participate in. Turning in before we turn out.

I meditate regularly and I always try to do this in the morning before I do anything else. Ultimately it is great to meditate at any time but there is something about doing it in the morning that sets the day in a more enjoyable, clearer, and more productive way. Somehow turning within allows me to have a more pleasant day even when the day does not go the way I want.

This is something that we practice at the beginning of every yoga class. We don't call it meditation but it is a time to settle down, connect to a restful state in the body, clear the mind, and experience ourselves in a way that is free from the effects of the play that life is. We do this also at the end of class. Not only to give our body some rest but also to help the body assimilate and take in all the good work that we have done during class.

This week we will be paying close attention to how we start and end our practice so we can set the tone for a beneficial and enjoyable yoga experience.

I look forward to seeing you in class.

Blessings

Jorge Nihāl
